2019 Girl Up Global 5K

2019 Girl Up Global 5K: Who Run the World

Girls run the world! On May 18, 2019 you can run, too – in the Girl Up Global 5K. Why? To show the world the power of girls. Girl leaders everywhere are lacing up their running shoes to defend gender equality and fundraise for girls’ rights and opportunities in India.

This virtual 5K gives girls the chance to organize their communities for Girl Up, so that girls in India can have a brighter future. Funds raised by our girl leaders will support a UNFPA program that helps girls in the Rajasthan region of India continue their education, prevent early marriage, and learn vocational skills to earn an income. The program also educates girls and women on important health issues to raise awareness of and access to public services available to them.

Our goal is to enroll 2,000 more girls in India in this program, and we can do it with your help! Your fundraising efforts will be matched thanks to our generous donor and Advisory Board member, Anu Jain. With every dollar doubled, Girl Up leaders are challenged to raise $100,000 to reach our goal.

Register for the Global 5K to create your fundraising page and let us know when and where you’ll be running. If you’re running with friends, create a team when you register – and then share your team’s link so others can join. You can also sign up as an individual and run solo!

QUESTIONS?

FAQs:

Who can participate in the Global 5K?
Anyone! We encourage everyone to run and fundraise either as a solo runner or part of a team. Girl Up Clubs should register together as a team.

How does the Global 5K work?

This is a virtual 5K, so run wherever you are in solidarity with other Girl Up supporters on May 18. Sign up to create a team, join an existing team, or register as an individual runner, and when you sign up you’ll set a personal fundraising goal. Pick where you want to run your 5K, like on a running path or track. You can also sign up for a local 5K race that’s already happening in your community. Start fundraising for Girl Up by asking for donations in support of your 5K run, and you can get your friends involved by running, too!

Is there a registration fee or any other costs?

No, this year there is no registration fee to participate. You can choose to purchase a limited-edition “Who Run the World” shirt, tank, or sweatshirt for the Global 5K and run in your gear. Shop now for your Global 5K gear.

I have a commitment on May 18; can I run the 5K another day?

Yes! Our goal is to have as many people running a 5K in their own communities on the 18th as possible, but we know things come up. You’re welcome to run your 5K as part of the Girl Up Global 5K on a day that best suits you.

What is the Global 5K fundraising for?

Funds raised from the 2019 Global 5K will go to a Girl Up supported UNFPA program in India. We have a big goal to raise $100,000 dollars so 2,000 more girls can enroll in the program. The UNFPA program protects adolescent girls’ rights and helps girls delay marriage and have children if and when they are ready. Girls are educated on important health issues and trained with vocational skills. Every $50 dollars enrolls one girl in this UNFPA program for one year. To date, Girl Up has impacted the lives of nearly 20,000 girls in India through this UNFPA program.

Why is Girl Up fundraising for India?

Since it was started, the Girl Up Global 5K has fundraised for a different Girl Up supported UN program every year, including Liberia, Guatemala, and India. Learn more about our impact.
