Girl Up’s Global 5k is a chance for girls (and guys!) from all over the world to help fundraise for girls’ empowerment programs in Liberia. Running a 5k for Girl Up allows you and your friends to join a larger community of other runners without leaving your neighborhood. By putting together a team and committing to a race, you are on your way to helping fund after school programs for girls in Liberia.

These programs provide vocational training classes where girls learn to bake, make soap and other things that help set them on a path to economic independence. They also provide safe spaces for girls to be free from violence- and the programs are only be possible if we stand up and make a difference! If you’re still not convinced, here are 5 more reasons you should run in this year’s Girl Up Global 5k:

1. Bond with Girl Up Supporters

Get the members of your Girl Up Club together for a fun activity outside a normal Girl Up meeting. Setting time to run together before the race and fundraising as a team are great ways to connect with one another. Recruit other Club members and friends to make signs and cheer you on, on the big day!

2. Get Active

A 5K, or 3.1 miles, is a great way to get yourself moving! An important part of being a leader is being able to take care of yourself. Exercise and running are a great way to promote a healthy lifestyle for you and the people around you. Running a 5k is a great accomplishment, and a fun way to get moving! So even if you decide to walk, jog or “horizontal run,” we need you to be part of our team.

3. Impact Girls in Liberia

By fundraising and committing to a run with your friends, you are helping girls in Liberia get access to health education, trade skills, and safe spaces. Access to these help girls become safer, more stable, and healthier. When Girl Up visited Liberia in November 2017, we were excited to see girls learn to bake, make soap and more to financially sustain themselves. Running a Global 5K is a great way to make a difference from your hometown that will affect girls’ empowerment.

4. Act Local

You don’t have to buy a plane ticket to be part of this global movement! Most cities have multiple races throughout the year, making them a great activity to do with friends. With the Girl Up Global 5k, you don’t have to go far to help change a girl’s life in Liberia. Check out our friends at Girls on the Run for a race near a U.S. city.

5. It’s Fun!

Running a 5K is a great way to spend a springtime Saturday (weather permitting of course!). They allow you to spend time with friends while being active and raising money for a good cause. Take to social media to share your race day pictures with other Global 5k participants all over the world by using the hashtag #GirlUp5K and you’ll see a retweet/report/like from us!

So, get your friends, coworkers, or Club members and sign up to run in the 2018 Girl Up Global 5k! Visit Global5k.GirlUp.org to register and for more information.
